You can find so many diet plans that you could spend your whole life dieting and change your plan every week but still never run out. The best weight loss programs have a number of similarities, and the can be maintained for life.

There are some plans that suggest that you need only count calories to achieve weight loss. To some degree that is true. If you eat fewer calories than you expend, you will lose weight–at first. Aside from the time factor there are questions about long bouts of cardio exercise. For many this only results in increased hunger. While cardio is clearly good for you, too much wears out the body, the joints and does little to build new muscle. You don’t want this since lean muscle helps you burn fat more efficiently.
Rather than spending hours a day working on cardiovascular fitness, shoot for 20-30 minutes a day of high intensity, muscle building exercise. You don’t even need to go to the gym. Walk briskly for 10 minutes, do a set of push ups, crunches, lunges and step ups and you are done. Vary your workout so you get different areas of your body each time you exercise. Done!
Component #3 – Life Sustaining, Sustained for Life
Too many diets think that by substituting “low cal” options for regular poor food choices, they have achieved a successful weight loss plan. I’m sorry to tell you this, but not only do those low calorie foods contain things no human should ever ingest voluntarily, they often do more harm than good.
Studies show that those who eat diet foods usually eat more of them in the mistaken belief that it is okay to do so. Not only are these foods poor choices nutritionally, they encourage overeating. How is that supposed to help you lose weight?
The best weight loss programs encourage people to eat life-sustaining, real foods, but less of them. Since these foods are packed with nutrition, you are less likely to feel hungry and more likely to be full of energy and life. This is a program that can be sustained for life.
